Undertones

POSTED 08/16/2008

I was listening to AM radio in New York City here this week, to WABC, to be specific, with an occasional tune-in to WOR, which has the oldest listening audience in the country. Even my 80-year-old father calls WOR the "old fart" station.

It is amazing listening. It is all anti-Barack Obama, all the time. It never stops. It is twenty-four-hour-day propaganda, with one purpose: to deny Obama the Presidency.

I could understand it  if the fanatical revulsion towards Obama was based on reason, or disagreement with his positions, or the fact that he wears open-toed flip-flops while on vacation. I can feel those people. These are all valid issues.

But I can't understand the Obama-haters' cries of anguish about his "lack of experience." Hello. Have any of these people ever taken American History 101?

What "experience" did Franklin D. Roosevelt--a rich mama's boy from upstate New York--have, or for that matter, his crazy cousin, Teddy, who was also a President? What the hell did Harry Truman--a tailor from Missouri--know about running the world? And please don't get me started on John Kennedy, Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, and the current guy sitting in the Oval Office.

What the f**k did any of them know about running the world? I'll tell you, to quote  Edwin Starr: Absolutely nothing!

The fanatical opposition to Barak Obama--the raw, naked, hatred of him that I hear on the "conservative" radio stations, every day--reminds me of the way Serena Williams is booed when she plays tennis.

Now, I am not crazy--at least don't think I'm crazy--but I have a good ear, and when I watch Serena play tennis, there is an undertone of those that boo her, an undertone that is feral, base, and disgusting, an undertone that is never given to some blonde Russian babe with blue eyes, blonde hair,  and a tight backside.

Some tennis fans hate Serena, and they express it in their booing. I cannot explain why that is. I can only say that I hear it.

That  same undertone is the backbeat  for  those radio pundits who castigate Barack Obama here in New York City.

Rush Limbaugh, and Sean Hannity, and Mark Simone, and Curtis Sliwa crucified Bill Clinton,  but they did it with tongue-in-cheek, almost ironic humor--they called him "Slick Willie," and all that, in a shake-your-head, humorous way.

But these  same guys--and they are not alone--absolutely hateObama. I can hear it in their voices,  and I can hear it in the voices of the lackies who call them, and who agree with them. I hear the undertones.

They're the same people who hate Serena. Why that is, I have no idea.

This is going to be the most important election in American history. If you are not registered to vote, please register as soon as you can. It's easy, and it's  free, and it takes about five minutes.

Do it!
